Quick Trick-Or-Treat Safety Tips

This Halloween as our princesses and super heroes go house to house gathering tricks and treats, there are a few easy steps we can take that will keep them safe and smiling. Some are the same ones we hear every fall, but others might surprise you…

Trick-or-treat in a group and stay with your group. It helps to know your route ahead of time, too. The more parents accompany children, the better.

Glow in the dark Reflective materials and flashlights let drivers more easily see kids who accidentally wander into the street. The Center for Disease Control reports that children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year. This is especially true this year, since the weather report includes rain, making it even harder for drivers to see clearly.

While it’s important to be seen, glow sticks should be handed out carefully to our youngest trick-or-treaters since their contents can be toxic even in small amounts. Hospitals see a marked increase in poisoning incidents involving glow sticks every Halloween.

Avoid masks that impair vision. Kids need to be able to see clearly, especially when crossing the street. Face paint or make-up is recommended instead.

Check every piece of candy before kids chow down. Wrappers should be intact, seams unbroken. Be wary of homemade goodies unless you personally know who made them.

Finally, have fun Halloween is a chance to play dress up and an opportunity to get to know your neighbors better. Truly, the chance of danger is very small, but following a few simple rules makes parents feel better and reduces that danger even more. We’re hoping the rain stays away this evening, and that all your pirates and fairies and little monsters get more candy than they can carry

Staging Tips for a Faster Fall Sale

Fall is a fantastic time to sell your home. Buyers at this time of year are highly motivated to find a home quickly, before the holiday season arrives. Autumn foliage gives a timely, colorful boost to your home’s curb appeal, and there are some easy staging tips to make your home more welcoming than at any other time of year.

Turn Up the Lights

As the days grow shorter, it becomes more important than ever to let your home’s light shine. Literally, turn on the lights in each room before showings, as well as outdoor lights. Replace dingy bulbs and clean light fixtures so that soft, white light fills each space. Make your home a welcoming sanctuary on a dark evening, and home shoppers will remember it as a brightly lit, friendly place they could call “home.”

Use Seasonal Scents

Fall brings cinnamon and apple pie, freshly baked cookies, and pumpkin spice everything. Use some of those seasonal scents in your home, whether in an air freshener, candles, or real cookies in the oven. Just remember not to use too many competing scents. Choose just one for the main level of your home, perhaps another for upstairs, and that’s it. Every room does not need its own flavor

Light a Fire

Nothing says “cozy” like a crackling fire. If your home has a fireplace, light it up when you know buyers will be visiting. Especially for late afternoon or early evening showings, a fire will be welcoming and warm after a cool fall day.

Simple Autumnal Décor

Bring some of the outdoors in, but keep it simple. A few-well placed pumpkins, colorful chrysanthemums, and a wreath with fall colors are all you need. Don’t go overboard, even if fall is your favorite season and you have boxes and boxes of fall florals stored away. Save them for next year, when you’re in your new home and the only person to please is yourself

Again, autumn is a great time to sell, and it’s not too late to get your home on the market and sell before the holiday season arrives in full force. Plus, the experts at Peggy Slappey Properties can help you find a new home, too. We have tons of incredible listings that are move-in ready and waiting just for you Call us at 770-271-5555 to connect with a realtor and visit us online at www.psponline.com to start your own home search.

Plant Now for Great Curb Appeal Next Spring

Is your home’s landscaping a little tired this fall? Turns out, now is the ideal time to place new plants for a landscape that will dazzle come spring Planting now allows roots to take hold and grow strong throughout the winter months, especially here in Metro Atlanta, where the ground never freezes. Amp up your home’s landscaping curb appeal this fall with a mix of bulbs, shrubs, trees, and perennials.

Perennials

The cooler fall months are the ideal time to plant perennials. Unsure what makes a plant a perennial? These are plants that come back year after year, as opposed to annuals – like marigolds or geraniums – that must be replaced each spring or summer. The most popular perennials in the south are hostas for shady areas and knock-out roses for areas with full sun.

Trees

Plant any kind of tree in the fall for a well-established, strong plant when spring brings warmer temperatures and the good growing season. It may not look like much is going on, but trees planted in the fall have time to stretch out their root systems. Above the soil, the plant is dormant, devoting all its energy to growing underground, getting ready for spring sunshine and rain.

Shrubs

Are you looking for low-maintenance, high impact plants to spruce up the areas near your front porch? Add boxwoods, azaelas, or hydrangeas this fall, careful to leave plenty of growing room between them. The great thing about fall planting is that you can save money by buying a smaller plant, allow its roots to flourish throughout the cold season, and sit back next spring as they grow and bloom. With a little bit of seasonal pruning, these shrubs will continue to thrive year after year.

Spring Bulbs

Seeing the first flowers of spring always brings a smile; it’s the first physical sign that warmer temps are on the way. This fall pick a few strategic places on the edges of your flower beds for bulbs that bloom first come spring. Daffodils, crocus, and tulips are great choices. You’ll love seeing them pop up in the earliest days of spring, the first bit of color to usher in the new season.

Protect New Plants

It’s important with each new planting to protect the roots with a one-inch layer of mulch or pine straw. Water regularly while the warm weather continues in Metro Atlanta, then let mother nature take over as the late fall/early winter rainy season begins. When spring rolls in, your home’s landscape will flourish and you’ll be the envy of the neighborhood Have fun out there playing in the dirt this fall
