Check out Consolidated Gold Mine in Dahlonega, GA, where gold was first discovered in 1828 – 20 years before the California Gold Rush. An extensive network of mining tunnels abandoned for 75 years is still in the process of being cleaned out, and tours underground include the original “Glory Hole,” where a 22-foot wide vein of quartz laced with gold was mined in the 1880’s. Take the tour, pan for gold and gems, and have the onsite jewelry-makers turn your treasure into a keepsake.
