Ice Storm Prep for Homeowners

Winter weather in Georgia is always an event, but if the forecasting is correct for what’s heading our way this weekend, everyone in Metro Atlanta needs to spend some time in preparation. The latest models predict nearly three inches of ice in the area, with several inches of snow farther north into Tennessee and Kentucky. This storm may be one we all remember for years to come. The good news is that we have time to get ready.

Check The Weather Channel and your local news affiliate for all the latest updates on this emerging storm.

Homeowners, when severe winter weather strikes, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to prepare. Imagine temperatures far below freezing for extended periods, ice accumulation that brings down power lines, and impassable roads that keep you at home for days on end. Are you ready?

Avoid Frozen Pipes

When the temperatures plummet, protect your pipes from freezing:

Set faucets to a steady trickle.

Open cabinet doors under sinks (especially sinks on outer walls) to allow warm air to circulate.

Turn off the water to outdoor spigots.

Fully drain outdoor spigots, then wrap or cover to insulate them.

Be Ready for a Power Outage

Locate and charge your weather radio.

Charge phones, laptops, iPads, and extra battery packs.

Stock up on flashlights and batteries.

If you have a generator, test it before the storm and have extra fuel on hand.

If you are on well water, fill bathtubs and other containers with water.

Buy drinking water, no-cook food items and pet supplies.

Stock up on baby wipes, paper goods, and needed medications.

If the storm does hit, be careful out there Stay off the roads, listen to local authorities, and check on your neighbors. Enjoy the winter wonderland outside your window, because if we know anything about winter weather in Metro Atlanta, it hits hard but it never lasts too long

The Cheesecake Tradition Continues

Real estate professionals across Metro Atlanta are on the lookout this week for the annual Peggy Slappey Properties cheesecake delivery, a Christmas tradition of gratitude, celebration, and sweet goodness.

Peggy Slappey Properties is a family-run real estate brokerage of over 40 years, and these cheesecakes come from the matriarch herself, Helen Barker, Peggy’s mother. A family recipe passed down through the generations, the cheesecakes were originally baked personally by Helen, known affectionately by family, friends, and all of PSP as "Mom Helen." The tradition began when she decided to hand a cake to her clients at closing along with their new set of house keys, way back in 1970.

Mom Helen was always known for her desserts – tall layer cakes, cream pies, and chocolate tortes – but there was something extra special about her cheesecakes. Each one was a work of art. Soon, she was catering luncheons, had her own storefront, and was delivering hundreds of desserts to restaurants, events, and yes, real estate clients. She would later write a cookbook, sold on Amazon.

When her health interfered with the business and forced her to close, her son-in-law, Mike Kelley, took over some of the baking responsibilities. Those real estate contacts then received their cheesecakes at Christmas, a sincere and delicious thank you for their business.

Today, the tradition continues, passed on to the next generation: Mike and Mary Kelley’s daughter, Sarah Davis, now bakes these cheesecakes each year with her family and sends them throughout Metro Atlanta. You can find her business online at Mom Helen's Heavenly Cheesecakes, where you can order your own personalized cake just in time for the holidays.

Today, the PSP cakes are delivered by the PSP elves themselves (our incredible agents) to every co-op agent and industry partner who bought or sold with PSP this year. Be on the lookout starting Wednesday, December 10, 2025, for your delicious slice of Christmas cheer

These cheesecakes are an incredible part of the family’s passion for creativity, community, faith, and tradition. Mom Helen was a one-of-a-kind woman: strong, faith-filled, and so very talented. Each year the cheesecake tradition continues is a chance to remember her and the profound influence she had on every person she encountered.

We hope this holiday season finds you filled with joy, warmed by family and friendship, and made just a little sweeter by the PSP cheesecake on your table. Merry Christmas from all of us at Peggy Slappey Properties

Trick-Or-Treat Safety

Spooky season is back, and it's time to get outside, enjoy the fall temperatures and visit with your neighbors. This Halloween as your princesses and superheroes go house-to-house gathering tricks and treats, there are a few easy steps to take that will keep them safe and smiling.

Stay in a Group

Trick-or-treat in a group and stay with your group. It helps to know your route ahead of time, too. The more adults that accompany children, the better.

Glow in the dark

Reflective materials and flashlights let drivers more easily see kids who accidentally wander into the street. The Center for Disease Control reports that children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year. This is especially true on rainy evenings that make it harder for drivers to see clearly.

Be Careful with Glow Sticks, Batteries

While it’s important to be seen, glow sticks should be handed out carefully to your youngest trick-or-treaters since their contents can be toxic even in small amounts. Hospitals see a marked increase in poisoning incidents involving glow sticks every Halloween. Also be careful with flashlights if the batteries can be easily removed, as they can pose a choking hazard.

Make Sure Kids Can See Clearly

It's best to avoid masks and costumes that impair vision. Kids need to be able to see clearly, especially when crossing the street. Face paint or make-up is recommended instead.

Check Wrappers

Be sure to check every piece of candy before kids chow down. Wrappers should be intact, seams unbroken. Be wary of homemade goodies unless you personally know who made them.

Enjoy the Fun

Finally, have fun Halloween is a chance to play dress up and an opportunity to get to know your neighbors better. Truly, the chance of danger is very small, but following a few simple rules reduces that danger further. We’re hoping the rain stays away this Halloween night, and that all your pirates and fairies and little monsters collect more candy than they can carry

Peggy Slappey Named GAR Realtor of the Year 2023

September 18, 2023

In case you missed it, our very own Peggy Slappey, broker, owner and founder of Peggy Slappey Properties, was recently named Realtor of the Year (ROTY) by the Georgia Association of Realtors (GAR). The award was given at the GAR annual meeting held this year in Savannah, GA. She was chosen from a field of 25 REALTORS® nominated across Georgia.

The PSP family knows how giving and dedicated Peggy truly is, and it was incredible to see her efforts recognized at this level. Her service to local charities, state REALTOR® organizations, and national real estate interests earned this distinguished award. She gives back locally, encourages others to do so, and is known for her tenacity in fighting for citizens to get the highest and best use of their land.

Real estate is Peggy's passion, and she understands how policy decisions effect the local homeowner. She served on the Braselton City Council for 12 years and is a Hall of Fame Investor with the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC). She is also active with local organizations like the Atlanta Sales and Marketing Council, the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association, and the Women’s Council of Realtors, among others. With 41 years of service in Metro Atlanta real estate, she continues to be an industry leader, protecting property rights and striving to make the dream of homeownership more attainable.

“What an incredible honor,” Peggy said upon accepting the award. Thoroughly surprised, she continued, “I’m completely overwhelmed. I’ve admired every winner of the past, and this award was always a highlight of the conference.” She continued with heartfelt thanks to GAR, her husband, Tommy Slappey, and her entire PSP family of REALTORS® and staff.

"REALTORS® continuously strive to become and remain informed on issues affecting real estate and, as knowledgeable professionals, we willingly share the fruit of our experience and study with others," said Peggy. "I am grateful for the trust and support of my colleagues and clients, and I remain committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in everything I do.”

Join us in extending congratulations to Peggy one more time She puts her time, money and energy where it counts, and the ROTY award was certainly well-deserved

Trick-Or-Treating Safety Tips

Halloween is a great time to get outside and get to know your neighbors. Trick-or-treating is a fun adventure for kids, one they look forward to for months. It's important to keep your superheroes and princesses safe as they collect goodies from house to house, so we've got some tried and true safety tips to help you prepare for Halloween night.

Children should wear reflective clothing and carry glow sticks or a flashlight.

Do a practice run with costumes, making certain that they fit well, do not interfere with vision, and are flame retardant.

Have a responsible adult accompany all children ages 12 and under.

If over 12 and judged responsible enough to trick-or-treat without you, be sure those children stay in groups, keep to an agreed upon route, and are continuously watching for cars.

Encourage kids to stay in well-lit areas. They should never take shortcuts and never go into isolated areas.

Teach children NEVER to enter any home without you or without your permission.

Reinforce the rule that goodies must wait to be eaten until they've returned home and been checked by an adult. Unless you know the person making homemade treats very well, it's best to stick to factory-wrapped candies only.

Lastly, check your local police department's website for registered sex offenders living in your area. Let kids know to trust their instincts if they feel uncomfortable or scared; they should get away from the situation and immediately tell a trusted adult.

As your family gets ready for Halloween, we hope these safety tips help you feel more prepared and allow you and your children to have a spooky good time trick-or-treating Be safe out there, and Happy Halloween
