Real estate has challenges in every season, and autumn is no exception. As temperatures cool and those crisp fall breezes bring thoughts of all things pumpkin spice, it's time to take a look at your home from the curb and see what others see. Is your yard full of leaves, overgrown shrubs, and weeds? Fall is a great time to sell your home, but curb appeal can make all the difference in a quick sale at top dollar. A few simple tasks outdoors can make your home's first impression a good one this fall.
Rake It & Bag It
Autumn colors are beautiful, but not on your lawn. Keep your grass free from leaves and other debris that gathers this time of year by raking and bagging regularly.
Clean Corners & Porches
Spiders and other creepy-crawlies move their homes closer to yours as the temperatures drop, leaving nests and webs galore. Clean your front porch and doorway top-to-bottom with a careful eye for cobwebs that might just appear overnight.
Exterior Touch Ups
Now that the weather in Metro Atlanta is no longer sweltering, it’s a great time for simple outdoor maintenance. Paint the railing on the front porch, clean the concrete in the driveway, and generally make the outdoors look cared for and tidy. This might mean pulling weeds in flower beds or adding new pine straw or mulch to freshen things up, too.
Trim Shrubs
Fall is the best time to trim back your shrubs, rose bushes, and ornamental grasses. Not only will your yard look well-manicured, but the plants will flourish when springtime rolls around – something the new owners will certainly appreciate.
Keep Fall Décor Simple
If you love Halloween and always decorate with skeletons and tombstones this time of year, it’s better to keep those decorations to a minimum while your home is listed. A pretty fall wreath and well-placed pumpkins are better choices, still festive but not ghoulish.
Light It Up
Lighting is so important in the fall, when daylight hours grow shorter. Make sure all outdoor lights are clean and in working order and update them where needed. Well-placed solar lights on walkways are inexpensive but very welcoming to prospective buyers.
Remember, autumn is a great time to sell. There are traditionally fewer homes on the market, which means less competition for sellers and more motivated buyers. But first impressions are more important than ever. So stop for a moment and look back on your home from the street. See it as strangers see it and take a Saturday afternoon to make it shine.
