Favorite Summer Escapes to the North Georgia Mountains

Posted by Blog Admin on Thursday, July 13th, 2017 at 12:58pm.

It’s HOT in Metro Atlanta, and summer vacation is drawing to a close.  Before the kids go back to school, try one of these fun escapes to the North Georgia Mountains, where you can cool off in the Chattahoochee, learn how to pan for gold, or hike a waterfall trail.

Check out Consolidated Gold Mine in Dahlonega, GA, where gold was first discovered in 1828 – 20 years before the California Gold Rush.  An extensive network of mining tunnels abandoned for 75 years is still in the process of being cleaned out, and tours underground include the original “Glory Hole,” where a 22-foot wide vein of quartz laced with gold was mined in the 1880’s. Take the tour, pan for gold and gems, and have the onsite jewelry-makers turn your treasure into a keepsake.  Afterward, stroll through Dahlonega’s pretty downtown square, full of unique stores and restaurants with small-town charm.

Not a fan of underground spaces? Stay above ground with Cool River Tubing, where you can “Shoot the Hooch.”  Located in the alpine village of Helen, GA, the company lets visitors float down the headwaters of the Chattahoochee on either 1-hour or 2-hour trips.  It’s inexpensive and a great way to see a part of Georgia like no other. When you’re done floating, explore Bavarian-style Helen with its authentic German restaurants and quaint shops.

Need a further escape? The North Georgia Mountains are peppered with amazing waterfalls and state parks dedicated to keeping the trails open and clear.  Hike beneath the trees and up to Anna Ruby Falls near Unicoi State Park just north of Helen.  Twin waterfalls cascade into this mountain valley, where an easy, two-mile hike lands you on wooden, railed platforms to enjoy the view above and below.  For more hikes, both long and short, check out  www.atlantatrails.com.

Metro Atlanta is uniquely situated just a short drive from some of the best outdoor adventures in Georgia.  It’s a great place to live, work, and play. All it takes is a little imagination, and the last few weeks of summer vacation can be filled with fantastic new memories.
