School’s Out:  Your Guide to Metro Atlanta Fun

Posted by Julie Slappey on Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 at 12:48pm.

It’s almost here:  summer vacation, when kids get excited because school is out and parents fear the moment they run out of ideas to keep them entertained.  Luckily, we live in a beautiful state where there are plenty of area attractions, parks, hiking trails, and activities to keep the kids busy all summer long.

Downtown Atlanta

Venture downtown this summer to visit Zoo Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium, The World of Coca-Cola, or The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, or Stone Mountain Park.  There are plenty of summer camp opportunities for kids who want a more in-depth experience, and you can check websites like Groupon to save money on admission with great discount codes.  For thrill seekers, don’t forget Six Flags Over Georgia, where you can beat the heat in the waterpark or let your hair down on a roller coaster.

North Georgia Mountains

Sometimes you need to escape the traffic, crowds, and noise of city life and experience the quiet of nature.  There are countless hiking trails, waterfalls, and state parks (some of which are pet-friendly, too) all within an hour or two of the city. You can even float on an innertube down the Chattahoochee!  Check out Georgia’s official tourism page HERE for some fantastic day-tripping ideas.

Lake Lanier/Lake Hartwell

A day at the lake can make all your worries disappear – and it’ll keep the kids entertained all day, too! Public access beaches and parks at both Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell only require a small admission/parking fee, and you can pack a cooler for a picnic to have a truly economical, fun day at the lake.  If you enjoy the full waterpark experience, check out Lake Lanier Islands, where you can have a true stay-cation at the resort or purchase one-day passes.

Movie Theater Cheap Seats

Most local movie theaters run specials over the summer months (June and July) for families stuck at home on rainy days.  Check your closest theater for a schedule of discounted movies, usually run early in the day and rated G or PG for the littles.  Rates can be as low as $2 – a savings so incredible, you can have your popcorn and eat it, too!

We hope these suggestions inspired you to take advantage of Metro Atlanta’s many area attractions. It’s a great place to work, live, and play! Enjoy the summer months with your families, and create some lasting memories together.
