Memorial Day in 2020

Posted by Blog Admin on Friday, May 22nd, 2020 at 12:10pm.

Memorial Day is an important day of observance, a national American holiday where we pause to remember and appreciate the sacrifice of our fallen service members. Unfortunately, this year’s observances of Memorial Day across the country will look a bit different than they have in years past. With CDC guidelines still advising against gatherings of more than 10 people, parades and events have been cancelled in towns both large and small.

But in Gwinnett County, officials decided to get creative. Instead of cancelling the annual event, the usual ceremony will be moved online. It will include a performance of the Star Spangled Banner and Taps followed by a three-volley salute. There will be remarks by County Commission Board Members and Retired Marine Col. Parker Miller, a Vietnam War veteran, will be the keynote speaker. At least in Gwinnett County, this important day of remembrance will not go unmarked. The ceremony will air on TVgwinnettlive.com at 1pm on Memorial Day, May 25th. Look for the ceremony on official social media outlets, as well.

Memorial Day traditionally marks the unofficial start of summer. Families will gather (in smaller groups than usual) to enjoy barbeque and the first pool time of the year. Throughout communities across Metro Atlanta, look for smaller firework displays and plenty of American flags marking a quieter, more personal observance of this important national holiday. We know that cancelling a few events will not dampen the patriotism and the deep appreciation that Memorial Day represents.
