Moving With Kids During the School Year

Posted by Blog Admin on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021 at 9:10am.

Is your family facing a move during the school year? Market conditions in metro Atlanta have put many families’ plans on hold as they search for the right home in the right school system at the right price. It can be a little like searching for a needle in a haystack, especially during the summer months, when everyone wants to move. If you find yourself in this position, facing a move to a new locale and new school during the upcoming school year, we have a few easy tips to make the process less stressful and a little more fun.

Hire an Agent Who Lives and Works in the Area

Your first step is to find a real estate agent who lives and works in the area. Not only will this agent have invaluable local information, but they’ll have access to a network of sellers and other agents to get you on the showing list early, which is key to winning in today’s fast-paced market. Local agents may also know of pocket listings, which are homes not yet listed/advertised to the public.

Take a Weekend Trip to the Area

If possible, take your kids to the area where you will be moving and spend a weekend exploring. Find a great local restaurant, enjoy the public parks in the area, and spend a little time getting to know your new locale.

Visit the Schools in Advance

For kids, an advance visit to their new school will take much of the anxiety out of moving. Arrange a tour of their new campus, meet their teachers, and get to know a few new friends. Moving in the middle of the school year can be overwhelming but visiting before the first big day will certainly make it more manageable, no matter your child’s age.

Let Kids Pack & Decorate Boxes

Kids, especially those 10 and under, just want to have fun during a move, no matter how stressed their parents might be.  Let them pack their own toys when it is time to move and let them get creative when it comes to marking the boxes.  Decorating the boxes with markers, stickers, and even colored duct tape serves two purposes: It lets kids participate in a fun way, and it certainly lets everyone know whose boxes are theirs on moving day!
