Memorial Day 2018 Events

Posted by Blog Admin on Saturday, May 26th, 2018 at 12:19pm.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 28th, when we gather with family and friends to remember soldiers who died while protecting our country.  The official federal holiday was originally called “Decoration Day,” a day of remembrance enacted immediately following the Civil War.  In 1968, Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, and now it is a three-day weekend that marks the unofficial start of the summer season.

Parades celebrating armed service members take place every year on Memorial Day in Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C., as well as in small towns across the country.  For local parades and events on Memorial Day in and near Metro Atlanta, visit http://www.atlanta.net/events/seasonal/memorial-day/. Several local communities will host live music, craft fairs, fireworks, and memorials to celebrate and remember our troops. Three of our favorites a little closer to home include:

  1. Gwinnett’s Fallen Heroes Memorial, which pays tribute to Gwinnett County residents who died in the line of duty. It’s a free event that truly captures the spirit of Memorial Day, and it happens at 1pm on May 28th at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville.
  2. Fireworks at Lanier Islands. Weather permitting, Lanier Islands will have firework displays just after dark Saturday through Monday, with live music and all the fun Lake Lanier offers during the day.
  3. Stone Mountain Memorial Day Weekend Salute the Troops.  This weekend-long celebration includes a nightly laser show, patriotic music, and a fireworks display – all seen from the lawn at beautiful Stone Mountain.

Most importantly, Americans across the globe will stop at 3pm (local time) on Monday, May 28th to observe a National Moment of Silence in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice paid by every fallen American hero.  We at Peggy Slappey Properties will be joining in this moment of silence, and we encourage you to do the same.  We wish you all a safe and happy holiday weekend!
